Performance at “Kanamachi Festa 2022,” Katsushika Ward — Station Square Stage
In October 2022, we were invited to perform at “Kanamachi Festa ~ Halloween Party ‘Costume DE Atsumare!’”, a local Halloween festival for children in Katsushika City, Tokyo. The event organizers requested us to “bring art closer to the local community,” and we presented a participatory outdoor performance in the station-front plaza.
The 20-minute performance piece, “Painting × Happening,” was
inspired by the 1950s art
movement known as the “Happening,” which took place mainly in public spaces—ephemeral,
spontaneous performances that blurred the line between art and everyday life.
We installed a large picture frame in the familiar streetscape, transforming the town itself
into a kind of “museum.”
As part of an interactive program designed especially for local children, we created scenes where they could paint together or become part of the “painting” themselves, as well as dance along to choreography we had shared in advance through a video tutorial. On the day of the event, children and local residents alike enjoyed participating in this lively and colorful art experience.
Amid the cheerful and festive atmosphere, we also incorporated moments of serene modern dance and mysterious contemporary movement inspired by painting, aiming to share the poetic and imaginative spirit of art through dance.
Through the creation and performance of this work, we were able to further explore the idea of “dance that connects with the local community.”
