“Outreach: Practices Beyond the Theatre and Commitment to the Community” — Selected Project
Selected as one of the participating groups for the FY2022 Project to Foster Emerging Artists Creating the Next Generation of Culture (sponsored by the Japan Contemporary Dance Association), as part of the Emerging Artist Development Project: Outreach Project — Practice Outside the Theater and Commitment to the Community.
The idea sparked from a simple thought — “Wouldn’t it be interesting to
improvise a dance session with a street musician performing in front of a
station?” With that, we
stepped out of the theater and began an outreach project.
We collaborated with singer Seijuro Mera, whom we happened to meet in front of Shinjuku
Station’s South Exit, and together performed collaborative sessions in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park
and Aoba Symbol Road in front of Shizuoka Station.
At the end of each performance, the three dancers presented a jointly choreographed piece to
Mera’s original song.
Particularly during the sunny weekend afternoon at Yoyogi Park, many people stopped to watch
and enjoy the performance, offering a valuable opportunity to bring contemporary dance
closer to everyday life.
